HOLD UP - WHAT’S A YOGA STUDENT TRAINING?

You’ve heard of a YTT, but what’s a YST?

A teacher training is an incredible way to deep-dive into yoga. Even if you don’t want to teach, it’s still a fantastic experience with enormous benefits.

But it’s also a big financial investment and serious time commitment, which isn’t ideal if your main goal is to deepen your personal practice.

That’s where my new yoga student training comes in.

It’s a one-week yoga immersion designed to bridge the gap between weekly classes and a 200 hour training.

My YTT teaches you to be a skilled yoga teacher.

My YST teaches you to be a skilled yoga student.

THIS IMMERSION WILL TEACH YOU:

✔ How to be a compassionate and inquisitive yoga student - both on and off the mat.

✔ How to fall in love with yoga in a deeper, more meaningful way.

✔ Much more than just asanas - create a holistic practice from the outside in and the inside out.

✔ The philosophy, psychology and physiology behind yoga.

✔ The confidence and knowledge to get the most out of both your personal practice, and guided classes.

✔ Super cool stuff about your mind-body connection that’s easy to understand - but more importantly easy to use.

ALL THE AWESOME THINGS YOU’LL LEARN:

YTT topics just without the teaching.

I’ve chosen specific topics from my 200 hour yoga teacher training that will have the biggest impact on your personal practice. No teaching, exams or business talk, just a deep-dive into information you can immediately apply both on and off your yoga mat.

Instead of treating these topics as separate subjects, we’ll weave them together and build upon each one as we move through the course. Why? Because yoga is a vast and multi-dimensional practice, and connecting the dots helps you see the bigger picture and enjoy more benefits.

  • Have you ever wondered where yoga came from and how it’s evolved to what we practice today?

I’ll take you on a short but exciting journey through the main stages of yoga’s history and together we’ll unpack what the practice is really all about.

    • What is yoga? We’ll look at various definitions, plus your personal approach and what yoga means to you.

    • What is spirituality? At it’s core, yoga is a spiritual practice, but what does this really mean in our modern day world?

    • The origins of yoga and how it’s evolved over time - it wasn’t all “love and light”.

  • The yoga postures themselves are part of a much bigger practice. Together we’ll explore some other paths and approaches to compliment your asana classes.

    • The 8 limbs of yoga - the path to inner peace.

    • The yamas and niyamas - how to tell if yoga is “working”.

    • Applying these aspects of yoga both on and off the mat.

  • What’s the point in memorising philosophical facts if you can’t use them to enhance your practice? Information is only useful if you can use it!

I don’t teach an esoteric approach to philosophy - I’m much more focused on making philosophy accessible and relatable, so you can apply this ancient wisdom to your modern day lifestyle.

    • Yoga and the mind - the theory behind your thoughts and feelings.

    • Chita vritti - your constant mind-chatter and how to turn the volume down.

    • The kleshas - understanding the causes of suffering.

    • Samskaras and habits - bringing awareness to patterns and cycles and knowing when it’s time to make changes.

  • Here we can overlap yogic philosophy with modern psychology to get an insight into our behaviour and beliefs.

I’ll share snippets of yoga philosophy that are relevant to real life, such as making decisions, managing your emotions, and understanding the inner workings of your mind.

    • Suffering and contentment - long story short, our mind causes the majority of our suffering and contentment comes from within. Any self-help book will back me up on this, but isn’t it awesome that the yogis had this figured out thousands of years ago!?

    • Attachment, expectations and desire - the art of letting go.

    • Yogic decision making - how to make the “right” choice.

  • We’ll get our geek on and look at how amazing the brain is! In the philosophy sessions we learn about mental habits and patterns, but this also applies to our movement habits and patterns.

    • Things the brain loves - how its desire for energy saving, safety and predictability make it so hard to change a habit.

    • Neuroplasticity - how we can literally re-wire our brain. Super cool stuff!

    • Habitual movements - we’ll bring awareness to all the unconscious patterns you may have created.

    • Brain based movements - how to give your brain a beneficial workout.

    • Variety and repetition - finding the balance between “knew” and “new”.

  • We’ll explore the ripple effect that is present between our breath, thoughts and physical movements. It’s the key to having a truly holistic approach to yoga and is a fascinating way to see how science and spirituality are linked.

    • Intro to the mindbody connection.

    • The pancha kosha system - the yogic framework for understanding how everything is interlinked.

    • The parasympathetic and sympathetic parts of the nervous systems.

  • Zoning out or zooming in? A deep-dive into meditation, the common misconceptions, and what’s really going on in your mind.

    • Meditation and mindfulness - same same, but different.

    • Science of meditation - some awesome studies that have been done to prove how great it is and what happens in your brain.

    • Types of meditation - if you don’t like sitting still and being silent that’s okay - there are options.

  • You’ve been breathing since birth, but it’s likely you’re still a beginner! Bear with me while I teach you the true power of taking a deep breath. There’s more to it than just staying alive.

    • Introduction to the respiratory system - a quick recap on high school physiology.

    • The lungs and diaphragm - why “belly breathing” is misleading and what you should do instead.

    • Breathing techniques and pranayama.

  • Energy can be a mystical and abstract concept to understand. In this session we’ll start to make sense of energy, and learn how we can manipulate it and make it more tangible.

    • Energy, emotions and embodiment - emotions are energy in motion. They exist in your body, not just your brain.

    • The prana vayus - my favourite thing to teach and the biggest “aha!” moment in my personal practice.

    • Applying the prana vayus in your asana practice - how to use these new energetic powers on your yoga mat.

  • Did you know that no matter how hard you try, some yoga postures will be physically impossible for you?

Yoga is for everybody and every body, but asana is not a one-size-fits-all practice. Your unique shape, size and skeleton are going to have a big impact on how you move, and what your physical yoga practice looks and feels like.

Rather than aiming for the Instagram aesthetics of an asana or forcing yourself into certain shapes, you’ll learn how to adapt asanas to suit you so you can properly personalise your practice.

    • Introduction to individual anatomy - honoring your individual shape, size and skeleton.

    • Body proportions and their impact on asanas - it’s a bit like finding the perfect pair of jeans. This is all about how asanas “fit” you.

    • Common alignment cues - what do they actually mean, and which ones should you ignore? I have a non-binary approach to alignment - there is no inherently “right” or “best” way to do something - it’s much more personal!

    • Engagement and energetics over aesthetics - focusing on how something feels rather than how it looks.

  • Feel confident, excited and inspired to step on your mat without the guidance of a teacher or YouTube class. By the end of the week you’ll have everything you need to create your perfect practice.

    • Building a home practice - enjoy some inner peace outside the studio.

    • Setting an intention - refining your focus and finding clarity.

    • Using a base sequence - I’ll share the same base sequence I teach in my 200h YTT so you always have a starting point to personalise your practice. From this you can create unlimited classes to match your mood.

  • Silence can be golden, but it can also feel strange if you’re not used to it. That’s why it’s a precious part of the practice and something to observe in all shapes and forms.

Each morning you’ll get the opportunity to approach silence with a new focus, and you’ll see first-hand how it’s much more than not speaking.

  • Enjoy a variety of guided classes and themed practices - each one unique.

The nice thing about extended sessions is we have time to workshop different parts of the physical practice.

You’ll also get to enjoy some relaxing evening classes - think yin yoga or restorative asanas, grounding movement, and soothing sound baths.

THIS IMMERSION IS FOR YOU IF…

  • Studio classes are great, but they don’t always leave space for deeper exploration. This training gives you the time to ask questions, refine your practice, and dig into the 'why' behind what we do in yoga.

  • If you’ve been practicing for a while but feel stuck in the same routines, this immersion will introduce fresh ideas - new movements, perspectives, and techniques to bring depth to your time on the mat.

  • Yoga isn’t just about postures. In this training, we’ll explore how yoga influences the mind, emotions, and nervous system, helping you integrate its benefits into everyday life.

  • A 200-hour YTT is a big commitment, and if you're not interested in teaching, it might not feel like the right fit. This immersion offers the depth of a teacher training, without the teaching component.

  • When you teach, your own practice often takes a backseat. This week is a chance to step away from class planning and rediscover your love for movement, breath, and learning.

  • If you’ve completed a YTT but still feel unsure about certain concepts, this training will reinforce key principles in a relaxed, non-pressured environment.

* This training counts as 50 hours of continuing education with Yoga Alliance.

BUT IT’S NOT FOR YOU IF…

  • This is an intensive training, not a vacation. While there’s space to breathe, reflect, and enjoy the surroundings, the focus is on deepening your yoga practice - not just unwinding with some gentle flows and a smoothie in hand.

  • Yes, yoga can make you stronger and more flexible, but this immersion isn’t just about the physical postures. We’ll explore breathwork, meditation, and the deeper layers of yoga beyond the mat.

  • If you’re not open to exploring new perspectives, asking questions, and engaging with the material, this might not be the right fit. This immersion is for curious minds who want to go deeper.

  • The schedule is structured with full days of practice, discussions, and learning. If you're looking for a relaxing yoga holiday, this isn't that.

During the week you’ll get two afternoons off to chill. You can head to the thermal baths or take a hike in nature - whatever you want to do to enjoy your free time.

  • If your goal is to become a yoga teacher, check out my 200 hour yoga teacher training instead. This immersion is all about deepening your personal practice, not learning how to teach others.

I HAVE THREE MAIN GOALS WHEN TEACHING THIS TRAINING:

For you to fall in love with yoga all over again (and again, and again).

I want to help you create a more meaningful connection to the practice - both on and off your yoga mat.

To move your practice beyond the postures.

This isn’t just about asana - it’s about learning how to integrate yoga into your life with intention and awareness. Uncover new layers by exploring the philosophy, physiology and psychology behind the practice.

White number 2 on a dark gray circular background.

To have fun while doing it!

Yoga is really important, but that doesn’t mean it has to be so serious. I believe playfulness, laughter and curiosity are the best ways to learn.

THE TEACHING TEAM

Meet Jess and Louise.

I’m Jess and I’ll be your main teacher throughout the immersion. Teaching yoga brings me joy, and I can’t wait to share it with you - helping you connect to your body, mind and breath in a more meaningful way.

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I want to help you discover what resonates with you personally - there’s no cookie-cutter method here. This means no black-and-white thinking, rigid rules, or “right” answers - just curiosity, playfulness, and lots of lightbulb moments.

I’ll be guiding most of the classes and content, but I have beautiful Louise by my side. She’ll be sharing her love of yoga with you too, as well as workshops, guided practices and soothing sound baths.

WHAT STYLE OF YOGA WILL YOU PRACTICE?

I’m not a fan of labels.

This immersion is all about exploring yoga without being boxed into one style or approach. We’ll explore themed practices that can be powerful, or calming, or anything in between. The focus is on giving you a strong foundation, but one that’s flexible enough to cater to your personal style.

Working with a theme rather than a style means that each practice can truly teach you something. Instead of instructing you through a series of shapes, we’ll sequence the sessions around a philosophical topic, a particular element, or a specific anatomical focus. It provides an opportunity for greater depth, exploration and learning - which is exactly what you’re there for.

Beyond asanas we’ll also explore meditation techniques and various pranayama (breathing) practices. Always delivered in an accessible way so you can continue to work with them once you’re home.

In the evenings you’ll get to enjoy some yin or restorative yoga, cosy classes, and deeply relaxing sound baths.

THE DAILY RHYTHM

A sample schedule.

This gives you a general idea of how the course is structured, but each day will be different depending on the content we’re covering.

During the week you’ll get two afternoons off so you can enjoy free time between lunch and dinner.

  • Throughout the week you’ll experience an evolution of silence, with each day focusing on a new aspect or approach to the practice.

You’ll soon discover that silence goes far beyond not speaking.

From when you wake up until the beginning of breakfast, you'll have the opportunity to slow down and tune in to yourself and your surroundings.

It’s a chance to be fully present, pay attention with intention, and embrace silence in its many forms.

You’ll also have one breakfast in silence as a practice of mindfulness.

  • Each morning starts with an extended asana practice, complete with meditation and pranayama.

No two practices are the same - you’ll experience a variety of styles and themes that showcase just how versatile yoga can be. Each one is unique and designed to teach you something new.

  • A mix of hot and cold, and sweet and savoury options.

If you know it’s better for your body to eat earlier, fruit, nuts, tea, and coffee will always be available for when you wake up.

  • Mornings are all about diving deeper. These sessions combine lectures and discussions to explore topics like philosophy in a way that’s engaging, thought-provoking, and truly relevant to your life.

You’ll get a short break part way through the morning session.

  • Nourishing food to fuel your body and brain - because learning and moving is hungry work.

  • Afternoons are all about bringing knowledge to life. Some days, we’ll break down asanas, alignment, and anatomy; other days, we’ll dive into the nervous system, breathwork, or meditation.

Whether we’re playing with postures or exploring the body-brain-breath connection, these sessions are designed to turn information into insight.

  • A 30 minute pause to get some fresh air, have a cup of tea, and take a brain break.

  • Evenings are about relaxing, unwinding, and integrating the information from earlier.

Think gentle movement, yin or restorative yoga classes, guided meditations, pranayama practices, or a soothing sound bath - sometimes a mixture of many - but always a cosy and relaxing end to your day.

  • Dinner is a lighter meal - think summery soups or hearty salads and sides.

You’ll enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a light snack in the afternoon to keep you energised until the evening.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • As long as you have a desire to learn, you’re welcome to join.

You’ll get the most out of this training if you have an existing practice and some prior experience, but if you’re new-ish to yoga and keen to dive in from the start, then it would be wonderful to have you there.

  • Absolutely! This is a fantastic refresher to take after a 200 hour training.

It’s even YACEP certified so you can get 50 hours of continuing education credits.

Certificates can be provided on request.

  • Good question! The YST is a great base for a future 200 hour training, so you may enjoy doing the YST first if you’re unsure about teaching.

My YTT covers all of the same content from the YST, but in much more depth, and has an additional focus on teaching yoga and the business side of things.

I’m always happy to have a call to chat through your personal situation in more detail and help you decide.

  • This is an education based course, delivered through guided practices, interactive workshops, reflective exercises, discussions and lectures.

Expect to move daily and get hands-on experience, but know that any movement is balanced by the intellectual and philosophical aspects of yoga too.

It’s much more than only asana - but you’ll usually have one extended morning practice and a relaxing evening practice.

  • No. There’s no teaching component and no exams - just an in-depth study of yoga to deepen your personal practice.

The immersion does count as 50 hours of continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance though, so if you’re a teacher, you can get a certificate.

Looking for a teacher training instead? Here’s the info for my 200 hour YTT.

  • There will be a maximum of 15 students.

  • Yes, you get two full afternoons off and you can use your free time to explore the surroundings or relax at the spa, for example.

  • A yoga retreat is similar to a holiday style escape and emphasises relaxation. Usually you have two guided classes a day - one in the morning and one in the evening.

The yoga student training is more intensive and focused on deepening your practice. While there’s still time for rest and reflection, the focus is on personal growth and learning, not just relaxation.

The days are longer and you’ll have workshops and lecture-style classes as well as guided practices. It’s more interactive and educational. In total there are 50 hours of learning.

  • Please bring your own yoga mat. I’ll provide the props - each person will have one bolster, a blanket, two blocks and a belt.
